We provide packaging solutions for Fresh Food products such as dairy and meat, convenience food and fresh produce products. Our number one priority, when it comes to fresh food packaging, is the hygiene, food safety and freshness of the packed products, without forgetting the functionality, sealability , runnability and visuality of the materials. The main purpose of the packaging is to protect the packed products and to communicate the brand message to consumers.

Amerplast is a forerunner in sustainable flexible packaging and sustainability is at the core of our research and development. In the fresh food packaging segment we take sustainability and the environmental impacts extremely seriously since food waste is one of our generations biggest challenges. Both the European Union’s Circular Economy Strategy as well as the UN’s sustainable development goals are aiming to reduce food waste by 50% by the year of 2030. This will require actions throughout the food chain.

We are constantly developing our packaging solutions to lead the way for minimizing food waste and the life cycle effects of both the packaging and the packed product. We are, for example, able to increase the shelf life of fresh cut fruits and vegetables without adding any chemicals to the products by simply measuring the respirations rates and packing the products in a perfectly designed and produced packaging. This example is our AmerFresh Active Packaging Solution, developed in concert with our partner PerfoTec BV.

The origin of the raw materials and recyclability

Origin of the raw materials have an effect on the life cycle effects of the packaging. We are constantly looking for more sustainable alternatives to traditional oil-based raw materials. We are aiming to make bio based raw materials a standard in our business.

As we move towards circular economy and the effective circulation of plastics, it is crucially important to design the packaging to be recyclable. According to the European Union plastics strategy, all plastic packaging should be recyclable or reusable by 2030. The majority of the packaging we produce is recyclable in the existing recycling streams.

“Our focus in the development of laminates is exclusively on the recyclable solutions. Amerplast has developed solutions for the laminated structures that are fully recyclable. We have finalized our development of PE/PE and BOPP/CPP laminates. There are multiple test going on with our customers. In addition, we are also developing a laminate with PE containing PCR (post-consumer recycled) material. These are available with whatever top film. This is our first step. The next steps will include barrier solutions and other more advanced solutions”, says Ari-Pekka Pietilä, Amerplast CMO.

“Also, the development in renewable material side is going forward. I hope to present new solutions and openings in the near future. Development is going forward faster than anybody really believes. The key is to find the best solutions for the totality. Now it’s time to keep a close eye of the global packaging development and proactively think about the solutions to be develop to support the sustainable development”, Pietilä concludes.
