Today’s consumers are aware of a product’s environmental impacts. This extends also to the product’s packaging, which is valued for being sustainable as well. Traditional polyethylene films are made of fossil-based resources. Furthermore, the production of traditional PE raw materials lead to significant greenhouse gases. At Amerplast, we are constantly looking for more sustainable alternatives to traditional oil-based raw materials. We are aiming to make renewable bio based raw materials a standard in our business.
Amerplast’s partnership with Braskem enables us to offer you a sustainable and innovative alternative to your packaging needs, while also contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases. The Green PE is suitable for both food and non-food packaging applications. While environmentally sustainable, Green PE has the performance characteristics of a traditional PE. For Amerplast’s customers, such as tissue producers, it offers an environmentally sound alternative for meeting their packaging needs.
Green PE is produced using ethanol, a by-product in sugar production. It contains no fossil raw materials and can be recycled in existing recycling streams. Green PE, however, has the same quality and technical characteristics as conventional oil based polyethylene. Sugar cane, in turn, is a 100% renewable and carbon dioxide depleting resource. Braskem’s Green PE removes up to 2.15 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere for each ton produced, from cradle to Braskem’s gate (source: LCA study by E4tech & LCA Works).
Amerplast is cooperating with a Finnish company Woodly Oy to present a carbon neutral and wood based alternative to traditional fossil based plastics. This new kind of plastic uses cellulose from sustainably managed forests as its primary raw ingredient. It is also designed recyclable, making it fully integrated in a circular economy.
The future of flexible packaging is in the recyclable and renewable bio based plastics. Woodly’s cellulose based solution can be utilized in applications currently made from traditional fossil based polypropylene, such as packaging for clothing, flowers or bread, for example.
World Economic Forum listed cellulose based plastics as the top emerging technology of 2019. Technological innovations, such as plastics that are cellulose based and recyclable, are believed to have an instrumental role in protecting the environment and mitigating the effects of climate change.
